ABRI PREHISTORIQUE D'AURIGNAC
A prehistoric shelter occupied during the Aurignacian period (35,000 years ago), this archaeological site is accessible all year round from the museum via a 1.5km shaded path punctuated by informative stops.
Discovered by chance in 1852 in the commune of Aurignac, this shelter was excavated in 1860 by the famous paleontologist Edouard Lartet. Animal remains, tools and hunting weapons dating from the very beginning of the Upper Paleolithic were discovered there. This site has been the eponymous site of the Aurignacian since 1913.
