📍 Alan
PALAIS DES ÉVÊQUES DE COMMINGES
After a period of splendor, the palace fell into ruin and was abandoned for two centuries. Today it has been restored. Free access to the courtyard and the famous cow gate. Several 13th-, 15th- and 18th-century rooms are open to groups only, by prior arrangement.
At the heart of the bastide town of Alan, the palace is the former residence of the bishops of Comminges.
In the late 15th century, Bishop Jean de Foix de Grailly transformed his residence into a frescoed palace. The octagonal tower housing a spiral staircase is a masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic art, with its tympanum adorned with a monumental carved cow, which you can admire directly from the courtyard.
