AVIGNONET LAURAGAIS

Come and discover the rich past of this village, witness of a major episode during the crusade against the Albigensians in the 13th century: the Inquisitors' massacre.

Avignonet-Lauragais is located on a promontory. It is a stage of the road to Santiago de Compostela (Way of Arles, Via Tolosa), the GR 653.

The Canal du Midi stretches out at the foot of the village which houses two pretty locks ("En Cassan" and "Emborel") as well as a small marina (Port-Lauragais)

In addition to the magnificent Gothic church Notre Dame des Miracles (14th-16th centuries), Avignonet-Lauragais has an interesting historical heritage, witness of its rich and tumultuous past: the remains of the ramparts (13th and 15th century) and the fortified castle (11th century) and the 13th century pepperpot tower which was once part of the fortification system

Stroll through the village: in the Grand'Rue, you will discover the beautiful 18th and 19th century houses.

The village is also the starting point for several beautiful walks, either towards the Canal du Midi or towards Fanjeaux via the "Collines du Vent" itinerary.

Visits for groups on request all year round: follow the guide who will tell you the whole history of this quiet little village of the Lauragais .
